How to Finance a Car: Smart Steps Before You Visit the Dealership

Buying a car is exciting, but financing one can be confusing. Between interest rates, loan terms, trade-in values and dealership add-ons, it's easy to lose track of what you're actually paying. Doing a little homework before you visit the dealership can help you get a better deal and drive away with a payment that fits comfortably in your budget.

Start by setting a realistic budget. Look beyond the monthly payment and consider the total cost of owning the vehicle, including insurance, fuel, maintenance and registration. A payment that seems manageable on its own may feel very different once these other costs are added in.

Check your credit and get pre-approved

Your credit history has a big influence on the interest rate you're offered. Review your credit reports ahead of time and correct any errors. Then consider getting pre-approved for an auto loan through a bank, credit union or lender before you shop. Pre-approval shows you what rate you qualify for and gives you a benchmark to compare against dealership financing.

Pay close attention to the loan term. Longer terms lower the monthly payment, but they also increase the total interest you pay and can leave you owing more than the car is worth for a longer period. A shorter term generally costs less overall, even if the monthly payment is higher.

Negotiate the price of the car first, then talk about financing — keeping the two separate helps you see the true cost of each.

A larger down payment reduces the amount you need to borrow, lowers your monthly payment and can help you avoid owing more than the vehicle's value. If you have a trade-in, research its value in advance so you know what a fair offer looks like.

At the dealership, review every line of the purchase agreement. Optional add-ons such as extended warranties, service packages or gap coverage may have value for some buyers, but they also increase your loan amount. Make sure you understand what you're paying for and decline anything you don't need.

Compare offers before you sign

If the dealership offers financing, compare it with your pre-approval. Look at the interest rate, the loan term and the total cost over the life of the loan. Choosing the offer with the lowest total cost — not just the lowest monthly payment — usually leads to the best outcome.
